A review of the Stanky Pockets debut posted by Trip Meadows on 07/14/2008
Stanky Pockets debut Family features a diverse and tight sound. A bit of the classic and a dash of southern rock blend together nicely. Family is a bit trippy at times but jams through out. Despite its elusive classification, it’s a solid CD. Stanky Pockets has produced a strong concoction of instrumental pieces mixed lyrical numbers. Potent guitar work and large hits of harmonica are the highlights of this piece.
This CD comes out rocking with an instrumental piece Big Top. Heavy on the harmonica and the danceable beats. Like John Popper on acid.
Got No Worries features some telling lyrics in the chorus “well you might not think I’m a Saint cause I smoke early and drink late. Well that’s OK, that’s just fine, cause I’ve got no worries on my mind.” Yeah great, no worries….then the song fades out to what sounds like a loud crash…hmm. It’s a good song but there seems to be a moral to this story.
Bottle of Wine has more of a classic rock feel. This number has got to be a fan favorite. This catchy tune stays on the brain much longer than a stoner’s short term memory should allow. This tune’s lyrics and chorus make up a memorable number.
Cops and Robbers is a hooky country tune. The lyrics are quite amusing and have to be derived from some personal experience of a band member or two. It seems a bit out of place on this disc. It does add an element of fun, and provides an amusing twist.
Nana Juice has an excellent beat and song progression. It’s a very jammy tune which is reminiscent of a SCI jam.
If you like ripping guitar, cue up to Life Ain’t Gonna Wait. This catchy tune features one of the best guitar licks on the disc. On a CD filled with memorable guitar work, the lick on this tune it the tops.
Family is quite creative and entertaining. Overall the songwriting and execution was solid. This disc displays adequate vocals, strong guitar work, and meaningful lyrics. It’s a good mix of jammy instrumentals and lyrical numbers. The production value is solid, crisp and clear sounds abound.
Make sure to pick this one up.
