Details of the funk method of BiggaDigga posted by Trip Meadows on 04/17/2008
Next up for review is the debut release for the Denver based BiggaDigga. Titled Go Figga the CD was self produced and released by the band. Go Figga contains 9 original tunes which are quite entertaining.
“Go Figga” features jazz infused funk which elicits memories of the funk classics from the past. Several times I caught myself thinking “is this a cover tune” only to remind myself that this CD features all original material. Bigga Digga’s grooves are so familiar yet so new to my ears.
No vocals on this disc, only fat funky jams. Go Figga is highlighted by strong bass lines which are the backbone of the BiggaDigga groove. The disc exhibits masterful guitar work, screaming saxophone, snappy drums, and funky organ. My ears took delight in the harmonic riffs which perfectly synch guitar and sax.
The music composition was splendid. Without lyrics and vocals the emotion of the songs is conveyed by the arrangement of the piece. “Move on it” elicits many images for me. This song would make a cool video, or back track in a movie. The music tells a story…different for each listener. “Move on it” is well written, with a cool progression.
If you dig ripping saxophone and screaming guitar licks “Jim Jam” features these laced with a hooky, yet funky back beat similar to the classics.
Want a good beat? ”What’s His Name” hits you with one right off the bat then transitions to more of a down temo beat filled with some splintering guitar work.
“Lay it on me” is a very upbeat and danceable number featuring a rhythmic and funky groove. Are these guys in the pocket? They sure as hell are….”Lay it on me” does just that…lay it on me man…lay it on me.
The self titled “Bigga Digga” is also a solid tune. Nice progressions and rhythm changes. Each instrument gets a chance to shine. A bit of noodling is thrown in too. A nice jam all around.
"Just Diggler" shows the more experimental side of the band. It's a mystery how artists name their songs that have no words. This is a nice piece. It shows this band can experiment a bit and explore the jazzier side of funk.
Go Figga projects a nice crisp and clear sound…crank up the funk as loud as you can take it. Good production value overall. Most self produced projects typically lack an element here or there. Go Figga is solid through and through.
Overall I really enjoyed checking out Go Figga. I even found myself humming some BiggaDigga at the office. If you like jazzy funk, then go check out the band and buy their disc. You gotta do it.
