Show Review: The Circus
in Concert Review

Oh what a night when The Circus came to town.

It was a fine Friday night to head down to Five Points and check out some of the fine bands hailing from the Colorado Front Range. The event was titled “The Circus” and the name intrigued me from the moment I read it on a CJS concert listing. This is the type of event which I enjoy most, a showcase of local bands. The first amazing feat for the ring leader was to book both Quixote’s and Cervante’s as the venue for this event. A very difficult feat indeed as this almost never happens, and is practically unheard of for local talent….on a weekend to boot. The Circus was a great idea and provided some stellar entertainment. Never a dull moment, as one band finished another started. Good bands and hot hippie chicks with their hoola hoops always make for a fun time.

The event started an hour or so before I arrived so my review begins with The Holden Young Trio. The Boulder based trio took the Quixote’s stage and played a good set. The audience was a bit light early in the night. Those that did make it out early got their moneys worth right off the bat. HY3 displayed some excellent vocals and well written songs…..very catchy stuff.

Next up was James and the Devil over at Cervante’s. The Denver based favorite, JAD brought out quite a few peeps with an assist from the later time slot. James and The Devil gave us some sick jams laced with contagious energy. Their lively stage presence compliments their rowdy acoustic sound. Their set was one of my favorites from the night as they are just so much fun.

Next up was Elephant Revival Concept back at Quixote’s. The Boulder based band served up some bluegrass and folk jams with their unique acoustic flair. The ladies who front the band are easy on the eyes and even better on the ears. Excellent vocals and splendid fiddling were the highlights for me.

Wasabi took the Cervante’s stage to the delight of their fans. The Ft. Collins based band delivered a solid set that got people on their feet. Wasabi was super tight and this was evident when hearing them jam. These guys are well rehearsed and very polished on stage.

Stanky Pockets tore up the stage at Quixote’s. The Denver based band came out and played an awesome set. Arguably one of the best performances of the night. SP was in the zone. Stanky Pockets added the rock and roll element with ripping guitar and harmonica licks….very powerful stuff. True to their name, the venue had a touch of skunk when these guys came out. Very delicious aroma fellas...heh

Kenetix closed out the night with a ripping set. The Denver based group had tons of energy and got the most people dancing of any previous band. These guys have excellent stage presence and really energized the dance floor at Cervante’s. Their funk laced rock and roll style really hit the spot, I didn’t want their set to end….but hey we had to get home.

Overall this was a fun night and the local bands did not disappoint. Neither did the hoola hoopin lovelies either…heh. Personally, I can’t wait till the next circus comes to town.
